We received Wise Alec: Civilize This! the travel version. This trivia game is history based and let us test our historical smarts by answering questions to earn points. By rolling a color-coded die, players are directed to choose a certain card based on a historical time period. Sometimes the color indicates a free choice, which was a favorite roll at this house. A great part of the game is the flexibility to be able to decide the end of the game. You can decide a point total, with the first person to reach a set score wins. If you are playing with a group of varying abilities, you can stagger the points and have younger ones reaching a smaller goal than older kids. Or you can set a time, like 30 minutes, and the person with the most points wins at that time. Although designed for ages 8 and up with two to six players, we found that even Henry (age 5) could easily join in the fun as long as he had a little assistance once in a while.
In addition to the history trivia questions (which are not multiple choice, by the way), there are a series of action and brain teaser cards that can help boost your points up. These are the Wise Alec cards (very popular at our house).
|Here's James doing his best karate move (4 points)|
|Demonstrating a salute (3 points)|
A final thing about the game is it's compact design. A slim magnetic box and dividers for the cards. The game gets extra points for how perfectly it fits on my over-crowded game shelf.
